Making progress in life in the shortest possible time requires mentors. In this age, it’s not only about what you know, who you know also matters.
This is because who you have in your life can add value to what you know and make it even more productive.
First, who is a mentor? A mentor is someone who has achieved what you want to achieve, travelled where you are about to travel and ready to guide you through so that you won’t make some costly mistakes.
A mentor shows you pitfalls to avoid, empower you with new insights they’ve gathered from experience and by following their counsels you get to your destination faster and with less mistakes unlike when they journeyed on that same path.
A mentor share with you values you should embrace, resources, skill required, show you right perspective to see things etc.
Most great people you admire in all sphere of life(Politics, career, religion, relationship, business etc) at some point in their life have mentors and despite their achievemens, recognition and awards they still have mentors.
Oprah Winferey was mentored by Dr. Maya Angeluo, Richard Brandson, the CEO of Virgin Atlantic was mentored by Fredie Laker etc. History is filled with a lot of examples.
You have to see a need for mentors in different aspect of your life. There are subject matter mentors, career mentors, relationship mentors etc
Let me explain my point better with a story.
Sometimes back, I wanted to meet up with a particular hangout. The hangout was on brainstorming on ideas and creating solutions to plastic pollution in Nigeria.
But the challenge was that I knew the location but don’t have an idea on how to get there. I mean no idea whatsoever on the DIRECTION to my LOCATION.
Knowing the location without the direction means I can’t get to the location. I thought of how to get there, I decided to call someone who I guessed knows the place.
Of course, he didn’t disappoint. He told me the direction to get to the venue but then, I didn’t fully understand the direction. I find solace with using Google Map and that was how I get going.
At a point, I assumed I knew the direction already and kept walking the street but unfortunately, I missed the road to my destination.
I wandered until Google Map helped me figure it out again and I ended up getting to my destination.
Imagine what not knowing the direction
of my destination cost me. The journey of about 4-6 minutes took me more than 45 minutes just because I don’t have a clear understanding of the direction to my destination. I ended up getting to the hangout late.
You see, many people know their destination but don’t have a clear understanding of how to get there, what to avoid on the road, what to do during the course of the journey etc.
Knowing your destination is good but having no direction on how to get there will make your journey longer than expected. Journey of days take years in the absence of clear cut direction.
Many are like me wandering the streets of life not because they don’t know what they want or want to achieve but because they don’t have directions on how to get there.
Having an ambition of what you wish to become is good but having a right mentor who will hold you by the hand to show you the do’s and don’t will make you get there faster.
Having a goal to achieve and meeting someone that has once achieved the goals and ready to show you “How To” will make the goal easier to be achieved.
You see, direction in life is very important. It’s importance cannot be overemphasize. Direction is vital in everything you do. Having no direction elongate your journey, pain, mistakes etc.
You see. having goals, vision is not enough. Mentors are shortcut to where you are going. They are shortcut to success. I know you’ve been told that there is not shortcut to success but the truth is that mentors are shortcut to success.
It will take longer time to achieve whatever you want to achieve without having the right mentors.
Mentors will help you not to make some costly mistakes , gives insight,
In this age, having a mentor is really important.
I will advice that you don’t embark on critical journey on life, business, career without having the right mentors to lead you.
There is no point in experimenting with your life and making mistakes that can be easily avoided by listening to those ahead of you.
Experience is the best teacher but some experience are too bitter. This type of experience are better learnt from others than it being your personal experience.
Having guidance to lead you all through your journey is far better than making certain mistakes.
Mentorship makes what seems complex very simple, connect you with some valuable resource, link you up with opportunities, helps improve your network, improve your decision-making prowess, keep you accountable in certain areas, inspire you,etc
However, there are some characteristics you should look out for in a mentor, don’t just make anybody your mentor but the right people your mentors. What you should look out for in a mentor include:
1.Character: Those you desire their mentorship must have sound character. You have to know that character is everything.
Those you desire their mentorship must have sound values that they live by. This is because of the influence mentoring has.
Having someone with no sound character as your mentor will do more harm than good to you.
They will influence you negatively and leave you worse than they met you. Like beget like, lion beget lion. A mentor with no integrity is likely to raise a mentor without integrity.
Therefore, watchout for mentors with sound character and not just anybody.
2.Results : It’s no longer a news that experience is the best teacher. Those you should chose as your mentors should have experience and produce results in the areas you want to be mentored on. We have slot of talkers but few people with results to back up their claims.
A businessman with a failed relationship should not be your mentor on relationship matters. Of course he can mentor you on business but not on relationships .
Results matters alot when selecting a mentor. A result oriented mentor will surely aid your results.
3.Willingness To Share : Some people are selfish. They love to hoard information. They have “Only me” mentality.
They don’t want anybody to produce the level of the results they’ve produced. They are not secure. This set of people shouldn’t be your mentor.
You have to select mentors that want you to be successful and therefore willing to share with you all that is required of you to be successful.
I mean select people that don’t hold back anything whatsoever from you. Select individuals with a large heart to share their stories, pain, regrets, mistakes etc.
4.Availability : This is also important. A mentor shouldn’t be too busy for you. A mentor should be able to make time for you irrespective of his busy schedules.
Without availability, you won’t gain what you suppose to gain from s mentor. Therefore, select someone who will make time for you to mentor you.
There you have it. Don’t wait, this is the best time you should get mentorship. You will be surprised to see the results your life will produce in the shortest possible time if you have a mentor.
Do you have question on mentorship? Kindly ask.
