Getting a mentor and keeping a mentor is different ball games. Several people have access to quality mentors several people wish to have but the relationship doesn’t last long because they have little or no knowledge on how to sustain their relationship with their mentor.
And life doesn’t care about your ignorance. Your ignorance will always find a way to catch up with you. You must be well informed about some vital facts about sustaining your relationship with your mentors for as long as you want it even if you want the relationship to continue forever.

If you really want your relationship to continue, you have to be ready to follow some blueprints. Pay attention to every bit of the information you’re about to read as nothing whatsoever is irrelevant..
So what should you do to keep your relationship with your mentors for as long as you want it?
1. Be submissive: Submit yourself to their authority. Lack of submission short-live your mentoring relationship. Don’t let small success, award, recognition, achievement get to your head and you start acting rudely to them. Your obeyance will do alot of good to you. To be submissive will make your mentor willing to expose more information, ideas and experience to you. So never grow to the extent that you’re not submissive. Be teachable enough and you can only show that by being submissive.
2.Implement Like Mad: Nothing bores mentor like mentees not being an action taker. If you’re willing to keep your mentoring relationship, you must be a fast action taker.Being an action taker will enable you to get valuable results that will make your mentor proud of you. Your mentor can only be proud of you and the results you’ve achieved only if you’re an action taker. Don’t frustrate your mentor by being indecisive rather motivate your mentor by taking action and dedicate yourself to constant practice. As a matter of fact, do more to exceed the results your mentor expect from you.
3.Be Observant: You see, some things are caught not taught. You have to start living with that mentality. Most people expect their mentor to teach them everything but that shouldn’t be the case. You must be able to learn by being a keen observer. Observe their expressions, body language, gestures, etc.
4.Don’t compete with them : The English dictionary define competition as “To be in battle or in a rivalry with another for the same thing, position, or reward; to contend”.It is foolishness in disguise to compare yourself and start competing with your mentor. It won’t make your relationship stand the test of time. Your mentor isn’t your competitor. rather than compete collaborate instead. Alot of success can be recorded when there is collaboration.
5.Get updated: We live in a changing times where things get obsolete quick. This means that we must constantly seek for knowledge. Mentors don’t like people that are not proactive with taking new ideas, following trends in their industry . So continous seeking of knowledge will help you keep your relationship with your mentor.You can share with your mentor new things you’ve learnt over a couple of weeks in your industry. He will be interested in keeping you as a mentee that way.
